Sorbitan Olivate is made from the fatty acids in olive oil that are combined with sorbitol. It is plant-derived (though it is also found in synthetic forms which we do not use at Rocky Mountain Soap Company) and great for your skin. Olive oil is a very common ingredient, obviously, and comes from olives. Sorbitol, on the other hand, is a natural sugar alcohol.
Sorbitan Olivate is generally used as an emulsifier (to help the ingredients mix), emollient and as a mild cleanser. It is usually a waxy liquid that helps to mix the oils and water together in our formulas. Besides this, it also mimics your skin's own moisture which makes it great in lotions, lip products, deodorants and creams. We use sorbitan olivate in our lip products and deodorants because it keeps your skin soft and supple.
According to Cosmetic Science Technology, Sorbitan Olivate may also have an SPF boosting effect. This is because olive derived emulsifiers have been proven to have this impact on the formulas they are integrated into.
